Alex Katz may be best known for his stylized portraiture—he’s painted the likes of Anna Wintour and Kate Moss—but the octogenarian has also been creating landscapes since the 1950s. He started with collages of cut paper before moving on to large, vibrant oil paintings, which strip away details to envelop the viewer not just in a place, but in a moment. This month the High Museum of Art shows 40 of those works, including 15 unveiled publicly for the first time.

On the calendar: One of the largest collections of landscapes by the renowned painter hangs at the High during “Alex Katz: This Is Now,” from June 21 through September 6.
